Mesothelioma Patients Need to Practice Self-Care

It is easy for mesothelioma patients to lose heart and “let go” of themselves for a period of time after they are diagnosed with this devastating disease. During rounds of chemotherapy or radiation therapy patients may feel too weak or fatigued to remain involved in their own care, or they may simply become discouraged and want to give up.

It’s important for mesothelioma cancer patients to understand that even the smallest gestures toward appropriate self-care can make a huge difference in their level of comfort, life expectancy and (perhaps most important) how their families cope with the mesothelioma diagnosis.

Simple Self-Care Tips for Mesothelioma Patients

Most of what an individual with mesothelioma can do is relatively simple, particularly if the patient makes these steps a part of their daily routine.

Mesothelioma Patients
  • Be sure to eat properly. This means getting plenty of nutrient-rich foods and lots of protein for energy. Your appetite may not be as strong as it once was, but don’t get into the habit of skipping meals. The stronger you are as a patient, the better you will fight mesothelioma.
  • Alter your eating habits if it helps. For instance, if you feel better earlier in the day, eat your largest meal then. Also consider supplementing your diet with protein shakes for strength and energy.
  • Prioritize, especially when you are undergoing radiation or chemotherapy, which can sap your energy. Be sure you make time for the important things, but delegate the rest. Remember, your number one priority of mesothelioma patients is staying healthy.
  • Nap! Two or three cat naps during the day are better for mesothelioma cancer patients than one long one and will help you feel refreshed and more relaxed throughout the day.
  • Find an interesting hobby that isn’t physically taxing so that you have something to look forward to each day that will keep you mentally active. Reading, learning about new music by listening to new CDs are all ways to stimulate your mind without being too tiring.
  • Talk to friends and family members. Holding your fear, anger and pain inside isn’t noble – it will only worry your family more and they do really want to help you. Mesothelioma cancer patients find that talking honestly and openly about their illness helps both themselves and their loved ones cope.

There are numerous mesothelioma support groups that can be located through your medical team, on the Internet our through your local hospital. Mesothelioma patients who take advantage of these services will find other helpful tips for coping with this life-threatening illness caused by asbestos exposure.
